Application

Eligibility

The Arabic Summer Institute is open to all talented students of Arabic. The average student attending will have made a serious, long term commitment to learning Arabic, be prepared to study intensively for ten weeks, and be performing well academically at their home institution. Due to the intensive nature of the ASI, it will not be possible to take other courses or to work during our program. The Institute will provide you with the opportunity to study with many highly motivated students of Arabic, including Arabic Flagship students from UT and other universities.

Application Instructions

You can use the 2015 Arabic Summer Institute application to apply for Beginning, Intermediate or Advanced Arabic for summer 2015. You cannot save an application once it has been started, so please review the entire application before you begin and give yourself ample time to complete the application (1-2 hours, if you have already written your statement of purpose).

You will be asked to upload your transcript(s) and a statement of purpose.  These documents should be prepared in advance and saved as PDFs.

Transcripts

Transcripts from all colleges or universities attended are required, including your current institution. Unofficial copies of your transcript are acceptable. If you are a UT student, you may submit an academic summary from the Office of the Registrar, and you should also include transcripts from any other colleges or universities attended. Please make sure that grades are listed on the academic summary.

Letter of Recommendation

One letter of recommendation is required. You will be asked to list a reference who is familiar with your aptitude for learning languages (or who can describe your aptitude for learning new concepts) and your motivation for succeeding in a challenging academic program. We will contact this person to request the letter of recommendation.

Statement of Purpose

In your statement of purpose (250-500 words), you will be asked to describe your immediate academic objectives and long-term professional goals. Please also discuss your interdisciplinary concentration, and explain how Arabic fits into your future academic and career plans. Lastly, please explain what makes you capable of excelling in an intensive, demanding summer language program.

PDF’s to upload and format

For the PDFs that you upload, please do not include a dash (“-”) in the file name.  A dash in the file name may prevent your PDF from uploading properly.

Please name your PDFs as follows:

  • Smith, Jane TRANSCRIPT #1
  • Smith, Jane TRANSCRIPT #2 (if applicable; some applicants may upload more than one transcript)
  • Smith, Jane STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
