Eligibility

The Arabic Language Summer Institute is open to all talented students of Arabic. The average student attending will have made a serious, long term commitment to learning Arabic, be prepared to study intensively for ten weeks, and be performing well academically at their home institution. Due to the intensive nature of this program, it will not be possible to take other courses or to work during our program. The Institute will provide you with the opportunity to study with some of the best and most motivated students of Arabic, including Arabic Flagship students from UT and other Arabic Flagship programs.

 

Application Instructions

Below are just a few instructions to know about in preparation for the application:

You can use the application to apply for either Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced Arabic for summer 2014. You cannot save an application once it has been started, so please review the entire application before you begin.

You will be asked to upload your transcript(s) and a statement of purpose.  These documents should be prepared in advance and saved as PDFs. 

 

Transcripts

Transcripts from all colleges or universities attended are required, including your current institution. Unofficial copies of your transcript are acceptable. If you are a UT student, you may submit an academic summary from the Office of the Registrar, and you should also include transcripts from another colleges or universities attended. Please make sure that grades are listed on the academic summary.

 

Letter of Recommendation

One letter of recommendation is required. You will be asked to list a reference that is familiar with your aptitude for learning languages or who can describe your aptitude for learning new concepts and your motivation for succeeding in a challenging academic program. We will contact this person to request the letter of recommendation.

 

Statement of Purpose: What to Write

In your statement of purpose (250-500 words), you will be asked to describe your immediate academic objectives and long-term professional goals. Please also discuss your interdisciplinary concentration, and explain how Arabic fits into your future academic and career plans. Lastly, please explain what makes you capable of excelling in an intensive, demanding summer language program.

 

PDF’s to upload and format

For the PDFs that you upload, please do not include a dash (“-”) in the file name.  A dash in the file name may prevent your PDF from uploading properly.

Getting a UT EID (Electronic ID)

You will need a UT EID (Electronic ID) in order to complete the application.  If you don’t currently have a UT EID or have forgotten it, go here.

Deadlines:

Priority deadline for applications is March 3, 2014.

  • Applicants who meet the priority deadline will be notified of the admission committee’s decision by March 17.
Final Deadline:  April 15, 2014
Applications accepted after the priority deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.
  • Applicants will be notified of their status by May 5.

Post-Application Steps

  • Qualified applicants from outside UT will be contacted within a couple of weeks of the priority deadline to schedule an oral proficiency interview.
  • Admitted students must submit their decision to accept or decline an offer of admission and make a deposit payment in order to reserve a spot in the Institute.
