Calendar of Events

During the academic year, the Arabic Flagship Program hosts a wide range of events, films, lectures, speakers and cultural activities to create an authentic Arabic language community here at The University of Texas at Austin. Examples include a visit from renowned Lebanese singer, Marcel Khalife, a film series focusing on current cultural issues dominating the Middle East, and a student led Arabic talent show. Akram Khater Lecture

Title: " مستقبل الشباب العربي "

Description: In light of the demographic bulge wherein close to 60% of the population in the Arab world is 25 years or younger, Arab youths have become a very critical demographic. This lecture will look at the realities facing this cohort in cultural, political and economic terms, and how these trends will determine in large part the future of the Middle East.

Description: Egypt has often been cited amongst Arab countries as the example par excellence of a solid, united, monolithic country that speaks one “language” in many ways, and which ethnically shows no fissures in its mosaic of a population. Yet, when we look closer, can cracks be seen?

Study Abroad Info. Session with American Councils

Description:
Ms. Rafah Helal from the American Councils for International Education will be leading this session to speak with students about the following topics regarding study abroad:

The due date for study abroad applications is January 15, 2010 and attendance at this information session is mandatory for those who plan to apply to study abroad in 2010.

Information Session with CARITAS of Austin

Description: CARITAS is a non-profit organization that provides help and support for those experiencing poverty. The support they offer begins with a safety net and links their clients to resources so that they can achieve self-sufficiency. The AFP is joining with CARITAS to provide volunteer opportunities for our students through their Assist Refugees Program. Description: Mr. Bill Stewart, Director of the LBJ School will be leading an info. session for students to learn about internships and eventual careers with the Foreign Service. Mr. Stewart is an Arabist who spent most of his 25 yr. career in the Foreign Service in the Middle East, most recently coming from three years as the Minister Counselor for Political and Economic affairs at the American Embassy in Cairo.
